Nobody has touched your WordPress site in three years

The person who built it moved on. The plugins are years out of date, the login is somewhere in an old email, and you have been told not to update anything in case it breaks. Meanwhile it loads slowly and you cannot change your own phone number without paying someone.

This is probably you if

  • The person who built the site is gone
  • You are scared to run updates
  • You cannot edit your own content without paying someone
  • It is slow, and you have been told that is normal
  • You are not certain you control the domain or hosting

What usually needs doing first

Getting you access and control back. That means the hosting, the domain, the admin account and the backups, in your name, not a former contractor's.

Then the safety work: updating what is dangerously old, removing the eleven plugins doing the job of two, and putting real backups in place so an update stops being frightening.

Fix it or replace it

I will tell you honestly which it is. A reasonably built site with neglect on top is worth fixing, and it is far cheaper. A site built on a bloated theme, five years of plugin sediment and no clear structure is usually cheaper to rebuild than to keep patching.

What I will not do is talk you into a rebuild because rebuilds bill better.

Making it earn its keep

Once it is stable, the more interesting question is whether the site does anything for you. Most small business sites collect the occasional form submission. With the same effort they could answer common questions, quote routine work and book appointments straight into your calendar.

Questions people actually ask

We do not know our logins. Can you still help?
Usually. Domain and hosting ownership can almost always be traced and recovered. It is a common first job and worth doing even if you change nothing else.
Do you take over sites other people built?
Yes. Most WordPress work is inherited. I will tell you what state it is in before quoting anything.
Should we move off WordPress?
Sometimes. WordPress is fine for a site that gets edited often by non-technical people. If yours barely changes, something simpler is faster, safer and cheaper to run. I will give you the honest comparison for your situation.
